Still Rolling, Ledwein Leads Minnesota Women's State Open

LAKE CITY, Minn. – Riding momentum from her win Wednesday at the Minnesota Golf Association Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship, Taylor Ledwein carded a 1-under 70 Monday at The Jewel Golf Club to take the opening-round lead at the 20th Minnesota Women’s State Open.

Pairing with Bradley University teammate Megan Welch last week, Ledwein and Welch came from behind with a 6-under 67 to claim a three-stroke victory at Dellwood Country Club as Ledwein picked up her eighth state championship win. When the Women’s State Open resumes Tuesday, Ledwein will look for her first win at the event, needing to hold off South Dakota State University golfer Cassidy Laidlaw who sits one shot back.

Ledwein, who exercised the option for a fifth year of eligibility later this year, carded one birdie during her opening nine Tuesday, rolling in her chance at the par-5 eighth hole before moving to 2-under with a second birdie at the 13th.

She dropped to even par for the round following back-to-back bogeys at the 14th and 15th holes, but finished on a high note by rolling in another birdie chance at the par-5 16th to post a 70 to lead after the opening round of play.

Laidlaw, a soon-to-be senior from Calgary, Alberta, carded a pair of birdies against two bogeys to begin the championship Monday before settling in during the inward nine. A bogey at the par-4 10th put Laidlaw over par for the day, but a birdie at the 14th put her into the clubhouse one shot off the lead at even par 71.

Defending champion Kate Smith, who advanced to the Round of 32 at last week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Rockville, Md., played her first 15 holes in 1-under Tuesday before stumbling with a double-bogey at the 16th to shoot 1-over 72. She will begin the final round in a tie for third with four-time champion Lisa Grimes, Minnesota State University-Mankato freshman Ava Wallerich and the University of Nebraska’s Leah Herzog.
