Thompson and Werenski Share 2-Stroke Lead for 3M Final

July 26, 2020 | 2 min.

BLAINE, Minn. (July 25, 2020) – Saturday’s scoring average dipped to 68.706, an improvement over the first two rounds and reflected by Cameron Tringale’s 8-under par 63, moving up 32 spots into a 7-way tie for 6th place and four shots back of co-leaders Michael Thompson and Richy Werenski.

Despite an early 3-putt at the 5th hole Saturday, Werenski birdied three of the last four holes to remain atop the 3M Open leaderboard, a position he has held alone or shared through 54-holes with Thompson. The two will be featured in the final group along with the 2011 Masters champ Charl Schwartzel, and go at noon today for the final round at the TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn.

“It's definitely good to have a strong finish like that,” Werenski said after his round.

“I was hitting a lot of greens and hit a lot of fairways today. A little hiccup on like the fifth hole today, a little three-putt kind of just got me maybe a little out of my rhythm on the greens. You know, I did a good job of just kind of hanging in there, grinding along, giving myself looks. And then I made like, I don't know, a six-footer on 14 or 15 and then just kind of clicked again. Gave myself a chance going into tomorrow,” he said.

Werenski, 28, from Springfield, Mass., is seeking his first win in his 99th start on the PGA Tour. Thompson, 35, of Tucson, Ariz., is chasing his second PGA Tour title after winning the 2013 Honda Classic. At stake if either player wins today is a spot in the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and an invite to next week’s St. Jude Invitational.

Schwartzel is the only player under par for every par-5 at the TPC this week. Thompson, who birdied four holes Saturday including the par-5 sixth and 12th, carded his second bogey of the week at the par-3 17th.

“In the middle of the round I got into a really nice groove… those three birdies in a row [holes 5-7] were kind of a great jump start for me. I feel like I played really solid on the back nine, I just couldn't get anything close enough, couldn't get any putts to drop. A couple bad swings on the last two holes, but made a really nifty par on the last to keep the momentum going for tomorrow,” Thompson said.

The purse is $6.6 million with $1,188,000 going to the winner.
