April 22, 2024
CHOUDRANT, La. – Former University of Minnesota women’s golfer Paige Bromen carded a 19-over par 163 during the first two rounds of stroke play at the 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Squire Creek Country Club, finishing one shot inside the cut line to qualify for match play.
After beating Iowa’s Kristin Paulson, 3 and 2, on Tuesday, Bromen is one of only eight players remaining heading into Wednesday’s quarterfinal action.
Bromen, seeded No. 57 for match play, downed fellow Minnesotan, Olivia Herrick, during the opening round before edging Lacy Shelton, 2 and 1, during the Round of 32 Tuesday.
Winning the fourth and fifth holes, Bromen took an early 2-up lead against Shelton before Shelton answered by taking the sixth and seventh holes to even the match.
Rolling in her birdie look at the 10th, Shelton took a 1-up lead, but Bromen would respond with a birdie at the 11th to square the match before winning the 12th to take a 1-up lead.
Taking advantage of a bogey by Shelton at the 15th, Bromen extended her lead to 2-up, but Shelton refused to back down and birdied the 16th to pull within one.
Bromen, Minneapolis, Minn., would roll in a final birdie at the par-5 17th hole to clinch the match, 2-up, and advance to the Round of 16.
Taking an early 1-up lead after three holes during her match against Paulson Tuesday, Bromen increased her lead after a bogey by Paulson at the sixth.
Paulson, Pella, Iowa, cut into Bromen’s lead by winning the seventh, but Bromen would win four consecutive holes to take a commanding 5-up lead with seven holes to play.
Winning the 12th with a par, Paulson carded back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th to pull within two of Bromen, but one final bogey by Paulson at the par-3 16th would give Bromen a 3-up victory.
Quarterfinal action gets underway Wednesday as Bromen faces Canadian Christina Proteau at 8 a.m. at Squire Creek Country Club.
Bromen, 29, began her collegiate career at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., before transferring to Minnesota for the 2006-07 season. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2008 and 2009.
