Carleton Leads St. Thomas by 1 Going into Final Round of MIAC Women's Tournament

October 7, 2013 | 3 min.

COON RAPIDS -- Shannon Holden, a freshman from Simi Valley, Calif., matched her first-round 77 at Bunker Hills GC (par 72, 5,812 yards) on Sunday, despite a 10-degree drop in the temperature, windy conditions and occasional rain.

It was the low score on a difficult day, and it helped Carleton, ranked No. 19 in women's NCAA Division III golf, take over first place in the MIAC Championships. It also lifted Holden into a three-way tie for the individual lead.

Like Holden, Carleton came in with the same score -- 318 -- for the second day in a row. The resulting 36-hole total of 636 established a school record, and it gave the Knights a one-stroke lead going into Monday's final round.

No. 13 St. Thomas is in second place with a 637, after posting the lowest team score on Day 2, a 317. Another nine behind is No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus, at 646. Two-time defending conference champion St. Olaf (unranked) is in fourth place at 656.

St,. Benedict's Bridget Cummings, the 18-hole individual leader, struggled on Sunday and followed her opening 73 with an 81. But the junior from Holy Family is still tied for first at 154, along with Holden and Erin Dingmann of St. Thomas. Dingmann, a sophomore from Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins, shot 79.

Her senior teammate Doyle O'Brien equalled Holden's 77, and she's alone in third with a cumulative 156.
