2024 Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf
May 3, 2024
ALEXANDRIA -- Detroit Lakes claimed both the individual and team championships last year in the girls Class AA portion of the state high school tournament. Kate Smith won the individual crown -- as an eighth-grader -- and the Lakers also grabbed the team title.
Now that the golf season has finally begun, It appears that neither Smith nor the Lakers have any intention of surrendering their crowns.
On Saturday, Smith shot a 2-over-par 74 at Geneva Golf Club in less that ideal conditions -- the temperature was 35 when she was on the first tee, and the wind was roughly 10 miles per hour throughout the round -- to take medalist honors at the Geneva Invitational. While she was at it, she helped the Lakers put together a winning team score of 312.
Alexandria's Black Squad posted a very respectable 336, but they were 24 strokes behind.
Smith's teammate Natalie Roth, a junior, turned in a 76. That earned her a tie for second place, along with Rocori sophomore Marja Sorenson.
