Gopher Women Sixth After Shooting 299 During Opening Round at NCAA Regional

STILLWATER, Okla. – After the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Central Regional the University of Minnesota sits tied for sixth after posting a 299 Thursday at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

The University of Alabama and the University of California-Berkeley are tied at the top of the leaderboard after the first day of competition as both teams carded a 295 Thursday.

The Gophers were led by senior Banchalee Theinthong who carded a 1-over par 73 during the opening round and is tied for 11th, eight strokes behind the leader.

Anna Laorr and Sarinee Thitiratanakorn also contributed for the Gophers as the two finished tied for 17th shooting a 2-over par 74.

Senior Carmen Laguna had a promising round through 15 holes Thursday but posted a quadruple-bogey on the par-4 16th hole before making bogey on the 17th. Laguna was just 1-over par through nine holes but finished her round at 6-over par 78 and sits tied for 68th.

Kent State’s Wad Phaewchimplee had an incredible start to the regional tournament as she made an eagle and five birdies to finish her round at 7-under par 65 to lead the field by three strokes going to the second round.

The second round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Central Regional tournament gets underway Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
