First-round 69 Has Dutoit on Top in Class AAA Boys

COON RAPIDS -- Jon Dutoit was No. 1 in the MGA's final boys high school rankings of the 2012 season, and he did nothing to diminish that status on Tuesday. The Chaska senior -- and University of Minnesota recruit -- shot a 3-under-par 69, and he leads the Class AAA part of the state tournament.

Moorhead's Ben Welle is second, one behind with a 70, and Rogers' Corey Muenzhuber, who also spent some time at the No. 1 spot in the MGA's rankings this spring,  is third at 71.  Dutoit, Welle and Muenzhuber are all seniors.

The underclassman highest in the standings going into the final round is Waconia junior Matt Rachey; he had a 72.

Another stroke behind, in a four-way tie for fifth at 74, are two Minnetonka players, senior Brock Timion and junior Jacques Wilson, along with Osseo senior Dalton Charboneau and Lakeville North sophomore Freddy Thomas.

On a day when when winds, if they were blowing at all, were at least 20 miles per hour less than they had been on Monday, the scoring was relatively low, and the teams were packed together. Moorhead is the leader with a 302, but three teams are within seven strokes.

With two players in the top eight, Minnetonka is second at 304. Chanhassen and Rogers, which tied Wayzata for the AAA championship last year, are tied for third at 309.

Incidentally, Dutoit is used to the pressure of contending for a state title. He finished third at the high school tournament last year. A couple of weeks later, he won the MGA Boys Junior Championship at Rochester Golf & Country Club, where he posted a 36-hole score of 144 and then won a playoff against Karter Smith on the first extra hole. Smith, a junior at Detroit Lakes, shot 67 on Tuesday at the Ridges @ Sand Creek, and is the leader of the boys Class AA part of the state high school tournament.
