Baker and Cloquet Boys Lead Class AA Championship

 JORDAN, Minn. – Behind Sam Baker’s round of 4-under 68 Tuesday, the Cloquet High School boys’ golf team jumped out to the early lead at the 2021 Minnesota State Boys’ Class AA Championship at Ridges at Sand Creek.
 
The Lumberjacks will enter Wednesday’s final round with a five-stroke lead over Totino-Grace High School and eight shots better than Delano High School.
 
Baker, a senior, began his opening round on the back nine Tuesday, scattering a pair of birdies over his first nine holes. Quickly finding his rhythm after turning at 2-under, Baker carded four birdies over his first seven holes on his inward nine to get to 6-under, but would finish with back-to-back bogeys to shoot 68.
 
Junior Jacob Walsh fired a 4-over 76 and sits in a tie for 10^th with teammate Karson Young to help the Lumberjacks lead following the first round, while Karson Patten’s 8-over 80 put him in a tie for 38^th after 18 holes.
 
Staples-Motley High School senior sits three shots off the lead following his round of 71 Tuesday and will head into Wednesday’s final round chased by Blue Earth Area’s Braden Gudahl and Pine Island-Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Joseph Scripture, who each finish the opening round in a share of third with a 1-over 73.
 
The final round of the 2021 Minnesota State Boys’ Class AA Championship is slated to begin at noon Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek.
