Braaten Medals; Mahnomen-Waubun Boys Win Class A Title in Becker

  BECKER, Minn. – Expanding on his lead from the opening round Tuesday, Blooming Prairie senior Tommy Braaten fired a round of even par 72 Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club to earn medalist honors by a 10-shot margin at the 2017 Minnesota State Boys High School Class A Championship.

Carding a 4-under par 68 during the first round, Braaten cruised on the final day by shooting 1-under over the first nine Wednesday before playing a steady back nine to finish at even par for the round to finish his high school career with an individual title.

Mounds Park Academy junior Matt Berning followed his round of 72 Tuesday with a 78 on the final day to finish in second place at 150, while MACCRAY’s Brady Madsen fired a final-round 77 to finish in third place at 153.

Mahnomen-Waubun opened the championship with a team score of 316 to begin play Tuesday and rolled during the final round, shooting 337 to finish 18 shots better than Lac Qui Parle Valley at 653.

Brady Liebl carded a 36-hole score of 156 to finish tied for fifth, while Jaycee Clark’s two-day total of 160 put him into ninth place to lead Mahnomen-Waubun. Sleepy Eye United used a team score of 343 to take third place and two-time defending champion Mounds Park Academy placed fourth at 677.
