Capan Advances to Second Round of Match Play at U.S. Junior Amateur in Tennessee

  OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Jumping out to an early 3-up lead Wednesday, Minnesotan Frankie Capan held off Hunter Eichhorn to win his Round of 64 match, 4 and 3, at the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the Honors Course.

Capan, Norht Oaks, Minn., fired rounds of 71 and 78, respectively, to advance to the match play portion of the championship Wednesday.

During his opening round match against Eichhorn, of Carney, Mich., Capan took an early 2-up lead by winning the first two holes.

Capan increased his lead to 3-up with his second birdie of the round at the par-4 fifth hole before Eichhorn took advantage of a bogey by Capan at the seventh. With birdies at the eighth and ninth holes, Capan improved his lead to 4-up, but Eichhorn cut into the lead by winning the 10th and 12th holes, trailing by two with six holes to play.

Capan rolled in his birdie putt at the 13th, while Eichhorn answered with a birdie at the short, par-3 14th before Capan closed out the match at the 16th hole with a birdie to win, 4 and 3.

Capan will face Costa Rica’s Paul Chaplet during the Round of 32 Thursday, beginning at 8:40 a.m. at the Honors Course.
