OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Minnesotan Frankie Capan fired a 1-under par 71 Monday at the Honors Course to begin the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 10th place after the opening round.

Severe weather forced a stoppage Monday and play was eventually suspended due to darkness late in the first round.

Otsego, Minn., native, Trey Fessler opened the championship with a 7-over par 79 Monday, while Lincoln Johnson, of Chaska, Minn., carded an 81 when he resumed his first round early Tuesday.

Capan, who won the 2016 Puerto Rico Junior Open and earned an exemption to earn an exemption into the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, had an up-and-down front nine with a pair of birdies with one bogey and a triple-bogey at the par-4 seventh to turn at 2-over for the championship.

Finding a rhythm on the back nine Monday, Capan made consecutive pars on his first seven holes before carding an eagle at the par-5 17th. He would finish his round at 1-under after converting his birdie chance on the final hole to shoot 71.
