Capan on to Match Play at U.S. Junior Amateur in Tennessee

  OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – After carding an opening-round 71 at the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur at the Honors Course Monday, Minnesotan Frankie Capan came back with a 6-over par 78 during the final round of stroke play Tuesday to qualify for match play.

Capan, North Oaks, Minn., began his second round on the 10th tee Tuesday and carded three bogeys with one birdie to turn at 1-over for the championship.

Rolling in four consecutive pars to start the final nine holes Tuesday, Capan would make triple-bogey at the par-4 fifth hole to fall to 4-over. He answered by converting his birdie opportunity at the sixth, but gave back a stroke on the ensuing hole with a bogey.

Capan, who won in 2016 Puerto Rico Junior Open in January, birdied the par-3 eighth hole but would finish the first two rounds of stroke play at 5-over par 149, one shot inside the cut line to qualify for the match play portion of the championship.

Lincoln Johnson, Chaska, Minn., carded a 9-over par 81 to begin the championship Monday and shot an 82 during the second round Tuesday to finish at 163, missing the cut by 13 shots.

Trey Fessler, Otsego, Minn., opened the tournament with a 79 before shooting 88 during the final round, missing the cut at 167.

Capan will face Hunter Eichhorn, Carney, Mich., during the Round of 64 Wednesday as the first round of match play is scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m. at the Honors Course.
