Constable, Johnson, Polland Advance in Web.com Q-School; Doeden, Danielson Just Miss

October 15, 2017 | 6 min.

Donald Constable has made a habit of shooting really low scores this summer. As an example, during one 10-day period in August he won two tournaments -- and was 52 under par for the seven rounds that were required.

It took him a couple of rounds to get going last week, but the former MGA Players and State Amateur champion from Minnetonka shot 65 on Thursday and again on Friday in the last two rounds last week at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George, Utah, during the First Stage of qualifying for the 2018 Web.com Tour. The resulting 72-hole total of 269 (11 under par) earned him a tie for 12th place in a field of 76, and that was good enough to get him through to the next stage of Q-School with three strokes to apare.

The top 22 finishers -- and ties -- advanced from St. George.

Second Stage qualifying will begin Oct. 31.

Also advancing last week were Neil Johnson and Ben Polland. Johnson, the former Division III All-American from Gustavus Adolphus and winner of the 2017 Nebraska Open (Constable tied for second), got off to a slow start in Dayton, Nev., with a 70 in his opening round at Dayton Valley Golf Club, and 75 in the second. But he rallied with a 69 and a 68 to post a 282 and finished alone in 15th place, two strokes under the Magic Number.

Polland is a former Bloomington Jefferson star who has become one of the best players among U.S. club pros (he nearly won the U.S. Club Pro Championship in 2015), and he aspires to play on the PGA Tour. He got to the Final Stage of Web.com Q-School last year, but didn't finish in the top 45, which gives a player full status for at least part of the next Web.com season. He, too, started slowly last week (73-76), then came back with 70 on Thursday and a closing 67 on Friday at The Breakers' Reese Jones Course in West Palm Beach, Fla.  That added up to 286 and was good for a tie for 18th place. It took 287 to advance from West Palm Beach.

Two players who narrowly missed were former University of Minnesota star Justin Doeden and Illinois All-American Charlie Danielson. They both tied for 30th at Mobile, Ala., where the top 24 and ties moved on. Doeden was just inside the number going into Saturday's final round (the tournament finished one day behind schedule because of bad weather). He closed with an even-par 72 for a 278. Danielson was just outside the number with one round remaining, and his final-round 70 wasn't good enough to move him up.

The both missed by two shots.
