JORDAN, Minn. – The last time the Lake City High School girls golf team played at Ridges at Sand Creek, the Tigers walked away with a 44-stroke victory at the Class Minnesota State High School Class AA Girls’ Golf Tournament.

On Tuesday, the Tigers picked up where they left off by posting a team score of 330 to open this year’s championship with a sizeable 27-stroke margin over Fergus Falls High School.

Sophomore Ella Matzke led the charge for the Tigers in their quest for a second straight Class AA team title, shooting 7-over 79 Tuesday, while fellow sophomore Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen contributed by shooting 8-over 80.

Juniors Emma Berge and Brooke Bee posted rounds of 84 and 85, respectively, to boost Lake City on the opening day of competition.

Perham High School senior and defending individual champion Mallory Belka also picked up where she left off a season ago—on top of the leaderboard. Belka, who earned a nine-stroke victory in 2021, posted a 4-over 76 during Tuesday’s first round to take a two-shot advantage over Redwood Valley junior Julian Brown to Wednesday’s final 18 holes.

Anna Eckmann, who looks to build on a fifth-place finish from a year ago, carded a 7-over 79 Tuesday to finish the first round tied for third with Matzke, three shots off the lead.

Tee times for the final round of the 2022 Minnesota State High School Class AA Girls’ Golf Tournament begin at noon Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek.
