2024 Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf Watchlist
May 10, 2024
BECKER, Minn. – Carding a team score of 348 during the opening round of the 2016 Minnesota Girls’ Class A Championship, Fillmore Central High School took a commanding 20-shot lead in search of its first state team title in school history.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove senior Abby Herding carded a 6-over par 78 during the opening round Tuesday and will begin the final round Wednesday tied for the individual lead with Legacy Christian Academy sophomore Sophie Gray.
Herding carded a 3-over par 39 on the opening nine before carding the same score during the final nine holes Tuesday to share the early 18-hole lead. She looks to improve on her third-place finish from a year ago when she shot 82-78—160.
Gray got off to a slow start Tuesday, carding a 5-over par 41 on the opening nine before calming her nerves and answering with a 1-over par 37 on the back nine to sit atop the leaderboard with Herding.
Gray carded rounds of 82 and 79, respectively, during last year’s championship to finish in fourth place, one shot behind Herding.
Heritage Christian Academy’s Kiera Smith sits alone in third place following Tuesday’s opening round as the junior carded an 8-over par 80, while Blooming Prairie junior Taylor Christianson finished the first round in fourth at 81.
Grace Miller’s first-round 82 led Fillmore Central to the top of the team competition as Miller finished the first 18 tied for fifth, while teammate Madison Scheevel finished the first round tied for 10th at 86.
The boys’ field was unable to complete the opening round of competition Tuesday as play was suspended due to inclement weather. The first round will resume early Wednesday.
