Former State Open Champ McCain Fires 66 to Qualify for Web.com's Knoxville Open
May 9, 2018
The score next to Andrew McCain’s name remained empty for the entirety of the 2018 U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Troy Burne Golf Club as the Minneapolis native was unable to make his 11:10 a.m. tee time—for good reason.
McCain will be playing Thursday when the Web.com Tour makes a stop in Knoxville, Tenn., this week for the Knoxville Open at Fox Den Country Club in Farragut, Tenn., after shooting a 6-under par 66 during Monday qualifying.
Looking to finish inside the top-6 Monday, McCain took advantage of his distance and made birdie on three of the four par-5’s at Three Ridges Golf Course, rolling in three birdies on his front nine.
Maintaining a clean scorecard through the duration of his round Monday, McCain added a fourth birdie of the day at the par-5 12th and another at the 15th to move to 5-under par. A final birdie on the 17th put McCain into a tie for third with five other golfers. McCain would prevail in the 5-for-4 playoff to earn a spot in this week’s championship.
Qualifying for the Web.com's Rust-Oleum Championship last June, McCain posted rounds of 75 and 76, respectively, to miss the weekend cut by seven strokes.
Playing in countless national events each of the past two seasons, McCain fired back-to-back rounds of 70 to open the 2017 Western Amateur Championship in July, before shooting 75 during the third round. A third round of 70 on the final day put McCain into a tie for 41st, missing the cut for match play by nine strokes.
McCain’s season as an amateur came in 2015 when he collected four victories, including the Minnesota State Open at Mendakota Country Club. He has placed inside the top-5 in his last eight consecutive state events.
To begin the 2018 Knoxville Open, McCain tees off at 12:55 p.m. CST, along with Americans Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey and J.T. Griffin.
