LAKE ELMO, Minn. – University of St. Thomas golfer Ben Frazzini birdied his first two holes and his final two holes, sprinkling in three more during his opening round 7-under 65 Tuesday to pace the field to begin the 103rd Minnesota State Open at Royal Golf Club.

When the tournament resumes Wednesday, Frazzini will hold a slim, one-stroke lead over the defending Minnesota Golf Association Players’ champion Andrew Israelson, University of Kansas and former Minnetonka High School standout Ben Sigel, three-time Minnesota PGA Section Omega Player of the Year Brent Snyder and 2017 U.S. Four-Ball champion and 2016 MGA Junior Boys’ Player of the Year Frankie Capan.

Frazzini started quickly Tuesday with a pair of birdies at the first and second and quickly moved to 3-under with a birdie at the par-4 fourth. Rolling two more birdies at the sixth and ninth, the former Wayzata High School golfer turned in 5-under.

Unable to continue his furious pace to the inward nine, Frazzini carded seven consecutive pars before taking advantage of the closing par-5’s at Royal Golf Club to take the early lead, thanks to his bogey-free 65.

Taking the early clubhouse lead Tuesday, North Dakota State University’s Israelson blistered his opening nine, carding five birdies before managing just one more over his final nine holes to post a 6-under 66, joined by Sigel shortly after.

Jeff Sorenson, a six-time Minnesota PGA Section Player of the Year, carded seven birdies against a pair of bogeys during his opening 18 holes as the professional from The Minikahda Club will begin Wednesday’s second round in fifth place with a 67.

The 103rd Minnesota State Open continues Wednesday when the second round begins at 7:30 a.m. at Royal Club.
