Gopher Men Open 2016-17 Season in Ninth at Windsong Farm

  INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Following an opening-round team score of 298, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team carded a 291 to begin the 2016-17 season in ninth place after two rounds of play at the 2016 Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm.

Playing as an individual in his first collegiate appearance, Mason Fiddle carded an even par 71 during Saturday’s first round before shooting 3-over par 74 during the second and will begin the final round tied for 24th at 145.

The Gophers were led by seniors Justin Doeden and William Leaf, as well as junior Riley Johnson who each finished the first two rounds of competition tied for 27th at 146.

San Diego State fired a team score of 289 during Saturday’s morning session and followed it with a 282 during the second round to take a two-shot lead over the University of Arkansas and the University of Oklahoma into Sunday’s final round.

Michigan State University’s Sam Weatherhead leads the field after two rounds, shooting 1-under par 70 to begin the championship before carding a 69 during the second round Saturday.

St. John University’s Austin Kottke finished the first two round of play outside the top-10, carding a 75 before shooting 3-under par 68 during Saturday’s second round. He will begin the final round only four shots off the lead.

The 2016 Gopher Invitational concludes Sunday as final-round tee times are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. at Windsong Farm.
