MINNEAPOLIS – Cruising through his first 11 holes at even par Saturday, Tony Sherman carded two birdies along with a pair of bogeys over his final seven to post a 73 and claim a four-stroke victory at the 83rd Upper Midwest Bronze Amateur Memorial at Hiawatha Golf Club.

Sherman took advantage of two par-5’s by converting a pair of birdie chances, moving to 1-under for the tournament through 16 holes Saturday. A bogey at the last would put Sherman in the clubhouse at even par 73, four shots clear of Peter Omeke.

Shawn Huston carded a 5-over 78 during his round Saturday to finish in third place, while Jason Daisey and Zach Mohrfield each fired rounds of 7-over 80 to finish tied for fourth.

Jason McGee posted a 10-over 83 to earn a one-stroke victory over Jules Jones and Mark Smith in the First Flight, while Clarence Hightower’s 1-under 72 gave him a three-stroke victory over Ken Riggins in the Senior Division.

John Snoddy overcame a pair of double-bogeys Saturday to pick up a three-stroke win over Henry Martin in the Super Senior Division.

KELLY GOES BACK-TO-BACK
Kathryn Kelly carded a 19-over 92 Saturday to successfully defend her title in the Women’s Division, finishing seven shots ahead of Sandy Bartz, who posted a 26-over 99.

Kelly got off to a steady start by playing her first five holes in 2-over, highlighted by a birdie at her fourth.

Despite a bumpy finish to her day, Kelly hung on for her second straight win at the championship.

Gloria Harris, winner of the event in 2018, posted an 18-over 91 to better Judy Zimmer by 10 shots in the Senior Women’s Division.

Started by Jimmy Slemmons in 1939, “The Bronze” began one of the first golf tournaments for Black golfers, helping give minorities an opportunity to compete against golfers at all levels from across the state.
