Mahnomen-Waubun Boys Jump Out to Big Lead at Class A Championship in Becker; Braaten Fires 68

  BECKER, Minn. – In two appearances at the Minnesota State Boys High School Class A Championship the Mahnomen-Waubun has finished as runner-up twice. Looking to capture its first state title, the Cougars fired a team score of 316 Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club to take a 14-stroke lead over Sleepy Eye United following the opening round.

The Cougars were led by senior Brady Liebl who played his front nine at 4-over par before bouncing back to shoot 1-over par on the final nine holes Tuesday to finish the opening round tied for fifth at 77.

Sophomore Jaycee Clark added a steady round of 77 as well, while senior Lucas Clark-Burnette finished the first round inside the top-15, shooting a 79.

Blooming Prairie senior Tommy Braaten started Tuesday’s opening round quickly by playing the front nine at 4-under par before shooting even par over the final nine to finish on top of the individual leaderboard with a four-shot cushion over Mounds Park Academy’s Matt Berning at 68.

In five appearances prior to becoming a cooperative with Waubun High School, Mahnomen claimed one runner-up finish.

Paced by junior Ben Laffen’s round of 75 and by senior Caleb Christensen’s 79, Sleepy Eye United sits alone in second place at 330, just one shot ahead of the defending champions from Mounds Park Academy.

The 2017 Minnesota State Boys High School Class A Championship concludes Wednesday as the final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
