McCain Shoots 65 to Medal, 15 Others Qualify for MGA Amateur Championship

  GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – Andrew McCain carded a 7-under par 65 Thursday at Theodore Wirth Golf Club to earn medalist honors as well as a spot in the 112th Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship.

In one of the largest qualifying fields, 67 players competed for 16 spots to this year’s tournament, which will be held July 20-22 at Northland Country Club in Duluth, Minn.

McCain, Braemar Golf Course, will be joined by Max Mason, Spring Hill Golf Club, who fired a 3-under par 69 while Jordan Rykal, Rush Creek Golf Club, and Aaron Pulanco, Mississippi Dunes Golf Links, carded rounds of even par 72 to qualify.

Mark McLaughlin, University Golf Club, Terry O’Laughlin, Links at Northfork, and Noah Lawson, Forest Hills Golf Club, also qualified as all three finished with rounds of 1-over par 73 Thursday.

Dominic Rosati, Baker National Golf Course, and Brett Gaustad, Keller Golf Club, earned spots to this year’s championship by firing rounds of 2-over par 74.

Nick Auman, Links at Northfork, Paul Korman, Columbia Golf Club, and Nicholas Gergen, Mendakota Country Club, each earned spots Thursday as all three players finished at 3-over par 75.

Grabbing the final four qualifying positions were Bennett Schroeder (Windsong Farm), Thomas Brandabur (Windsong Farm), Alex Case (Chaska Town Course) and Charlie Duensing (University Golf Club) who all carded rounds of 4-over par 76.

Randy Antonich, University Golf Club, Drew Engelking, Interlachen Country Club, and Andrew James Krasaway, Two Harbors-Lakeview National Golf Course, finished as first, second and third alternates, respectively.
