EERIE, Pa. – Minnesotans Paige McCullough and Olivia Herrick both won their opening round matches Monday to begin the match play portion of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Kahkwa Club.
McCullough trailed Florida’s Deborah Munoz after the opening hole, but McCullough came back two win three consecutive holes to take a 2-up lead after the sixth.
A birdie by Munoz at the par-5 eighth hole would put her within one, but McCullough took advantage of a Munoz double-bogey at the 14th to regain a 2-up lead. With a par at the 16th, McCullough closed out the match, 3 and 2, to advance to Tuesday’s Round of 32.
Winning the first two holes with pars, Herrick took a quick 2-up lead over Andrea Kraus. A bogey by Herrick at the fifth trimmed her lead to just one, but she answered by converting her birdie look at the sixth.
Kraus, Baltimore, Md., won the ninth with a par but it was all the further she would get as Herrick would win back-to-back holes at the 12th and 13th before closing out the match with a par at the 15th to win, 4 and 3.
McCullough, Minneapolis, Minn., will face Martha Leach, Lexington, Ky., at 8:40 a.m. during the second round of match play Tuesday, while Herrick will take on Californian Corey Weworski at 7:50 a.m. at the Kahkwa Club.
