October 30, 2024
PORTLAND, Ore. – A day after coming from behind to defeat fifth-ranked Maria Fassi during the opening round of match play at the 115th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Minnesotan Kenzie Neisen lost her Round of 32 match to Mathilda Cappeliez Thursday at Portland Golf Club.
Neisen, New Prague, Minn., took an early 1-up lead with a birdie on the opening hole before expanding her lead to 2-up with another birdie at the third.
Cappeliez, a native of France, cut into Neisen’s margin by winning the fourth hole, but Neisen would regain a 2-up lead by winning the sixth.
Winning the eighth hole with a birdie, Cappeliez trailed by just one and would win the next four holes to take a 3-up lead after the 12th hole as Neisen carded bogeys on four consecutive holes.
A final bogey on the 15th hole for Neisen would end her run at this year’s championship as Cappeliez closed out the match with a par to win, 4 and 3.
Neisen will begin her sophomore season at Oklahoma State University this fall, looking to defend her Big 12 individual title.
