BRAINERD, Minn. – Top-seeded Avery Bartels claimed the 23rd Minnesota Junior PGA 'Sota Series Girls' Match Play Championship by carding a late birdie to defeat Kelsi Mauzy, 3 and 1.

Bartels, of Oxbow, N.D., had little trouble during her opening match against Madelyn Holmstrom, 6 and 5, before edging Kieley Hanson, 2 and 1, to reach the semifinal round.

Squaring off against Hanson’s Minnetonka High School teammate Ruby Reding, Bartels survived a late surge by Reding with a birdie on the final hole to reach the final round.

Taking advantage of an early bogey by Mauzy at the par-3 sixth gave Bartels all the help she’d need, increasing her lead to four following a birdie at the par-4 13.

Mauzy struck back by winning the 14th and 16th, but Bartels closed out the match with a birdie at the 17th to win, 3 and 1.
