JORDAN, Minn. – Posting a team score of 309 Tuesday at Ridges at Sand Creek, the Pine Island-Zumbrota-Mazeppa boys golf team jumped out to an 11-stroke lead over Totino-Grace High School to begin the 2022 Minnesota State High School Class AA Boys Golf Tournament.

Senior Anders Larson led the way for the Wildcats Tuesday, firing a 1-over 73 to place third individually. Pine Island-Zumbrota-Mazeppa also got help from juniors Joseph and Michael Scripture, who posted rounds of 77 and 79, respectively.

The Wildcats, who placed fifth at the championship a season ago, returned five starters from last year’s team, getting a pair of top-10 finishes from both Larson and Joseph Scripture. Southwest Christian junior Jacob Ferrin rolled in a pair of birdies over his final three holes Tuesday to card a 1-under 71 and share the opening-round lead with St. Croix Lutheran freshman Sam Udovich.

Entering the week ranked No. 76 by the Minnesota Golf Association, Ferrin played his first six holes in even par Tuesday before taking a bogey at the par-4 ninth to turn in 1-over. Ferrin drew even by converting his birdie opportunity at the 12th, but gave back a stroke at the short, par-3 15th.

Finishing strong with back-to-back birdies at the 16th and 17th put Ferrin in the clubhouse with a share of the opening-round lead. Udovich, who placed fourth at the championship in 2021, enters this week’s event ranked 11th by the MGA and quickly got to work on his opening nine with back-to-back birdies at the second and third holes to quickly move to 2-under.

The 2021 Drive, Chip and Putt national champion would stumble late during his front nine, carding three bogeys over his final five holes to turn in 1-over. Udovich played the first eight holes of his back nine in even par but would eagle the par-5 18th to match Ferrin’s 1-under 71.

Sitting 11 shots back, Totino-Grace will need a big final day to avoid a runner-up finish in the team competition for the second consecutive season, placing 18 shots behind the 2021 team champions from Cloquet.

Starting Wednesday’s final round close behind is Roseau High School, who carded a team total of 326 to finish the opening round in third place, 13 shots off the lead.

Tee times for the final round of the 2022 Minnesota State High School Class AA Boys Golf Tournament begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek.
