BRAINERD, Minn. – An early birdie during the final match gave Peyton Savageau the only lead he would need against William Roiland Wednesday at Cragun’s Dutch Legacy as Savageau claimed the 23rd Minnesota Junior PGA Match Play Championship.

Savageau, a soon-to-be senior at Totino-Grace High School, cruised during his opening-round match against Charlie Fuder Monday, 6 and 5, before edging Wisconsin’s Tyler Reiter, 2-up, to reach the Round of 16.

It took one playoff hole for Savageau to get past Ryan Engel, but Savageau rolled in four birdie opportunities to help defeat Torger Ohe, 4 and 3, to reach the semifinal round.

Taking an early lead against Karson Patten early Wednesday, Savageau watched Patten ace the par-3 11th before he tied the match at the 13th with a birdie.

The two would trade birdies over the final five holes, with Savageau emerging victorious, 2-up.

Facing Roiland in the championship match, Savageau carded a birdie at the par-5 fourth and cruised over his next 12 holes, closing out the match with a birdie at the 16th to capture the tournament with one final victory, 3 and 2.

Savageau tallied his second win of the season Wednesday, claiming the Twin Cities Junior Championship at Victory Links in late June, two weeks after notching a runner-up finish at the Class AA championship.
