Smith Qualifies for Match Play at U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur; Heck Misses Cut

  PARAMUS, N.J. – Minnesotan Kate Smith bettered her opening round of 77 at the 2016 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at Ridgewood Country Club Monday, by shooting a 76 during the second round to qualify for match play.

Smith, Detroit Lakes, Minn., began the second round on the tenth tee and carded three birdies over the first five holes to get to 1-over for the championship. She would then card six consecutive bogeys to fall to 7-over before finishing the second round with four straight pars to 153, advancing to the Round of 64 Wednesday.

Anni Heck, Eagan, Minn., opened the championship with a 6-over par 79 Monday and followed it up with an 85 during the second round Tuesday, missing the cut line by eight strokes.

Heck finished as co-champion with Smith at the Class AA state tournament in June.

Smith will face Aubrey Jones, Covington, Tenn., at 11:21 a.m. Wednesday during the Round of 64 at Ridgewood Country Club.
