McCauley Ties for Big Ten Individual Title; Gophers Are 9th as a Team
April 22, 2024
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Kate Smith narrowly missed tying the University of Nebraska school record for lowest score in a single round when she shot a 5-under-par 67 at the Westbrook Village Golf Club's Vistas Course on Sunday in the opening round of the Westbrook Invitational.
That was one stroke higher than the 66 that the Huskers' Steffi Neisen -- a former New Prague High School star who now is the girls coach for the Trojans -- turned in during the Mountain View Collegiate in 2012.
Undaunted, Smith then proceeded to break the record in the second round Sunday afternoon, with a 64. The sophomore -- and former five-time Minnesota state high school champion -- from Detroit Lakes followed that up with a 71 in Monday's final round, which gave her an aggregate of 202, and that shattered another school record.
It is a measure of how quickly women's college golf is improving that one of the Nebraska players who shared the old 54-hole record of 209 is Smith's teammate Audrey Judd, and that she won the 2017 Westbrook tournament with that total last year -- but this year, even though Smith beat that number by seven, she didn't win.
Ohio State's Jacly Lee posted two 64's with a 69 sandwiched in between for a total of 197, 19 under par. Kaitlin Milligan of Oklahoma had the low round of the tournament, a 62 in the opening round, and ended up with a 199, which was good for second place. Smith finished third, five ahead of Notre Dame's Emma Albrecht, who finished fourth. Judd actually matched her winning total from last year (70-68-71--209), but had to settle for a tie for sixth place.
Nebraska also set records for low single-round team total, with a 273 in Round 2, low 36-hole total (556) and low 54-hole total 843. That was 21 under par -- and 17 shots better than the old Husker record of 860! But once again, it was good for a third-place fiinish.
Oklahoma lit up the scoreboard on the way to a 54-hole mark of 839 (minus 25), and claimed the team title by one stroke over Ohio State.
