Smith Starts U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur Tied for 58th in New Jersey; Heck Tied for 79th

  PARAMUS, N.J. – Carding a 4-over par 77 Monday, Minnesotan Kate Smith sits tied for 58th after the opening round of the 2016 U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship at Ridgewood Country Club.

Smith, who captured her fifth consecutive Class AA state individual title last month, opened her round Monday with a birdie on the first hole before taking back-to-back bogeys at the fourth and fifth holes to turn at 1-over.

Carding three bogeys over the final nine holes, Smith finished the opening round at 4-over par 77 and will begin the second round tied for 58th.

Earning a share of individual medalist honors at the Class AA tournament in June as well, Eagan, Minn., native, Anni Heck finished the opening round tied for 79th after shooting 6-over par 79 Monday.

Heck began her round on the tenth tee and would card four bogeys on her front side, turning at 4-over and would post two more bogeys during her final nine holes to shoot 79.

The second round of the 2016 U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. at Ridgewood Country Club.
