Stankey, Elis Win at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Paul Stankey of Yale birdied five holes on the back nine at Springfield Gofl Club last week to pull away from teammate Teddy Zinser and win the individual crown at the Princeton Invitational. 

The sophomore from Providence Academy opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 70, and followed it with a 64, which put him into a three-way tie for first. On the final day, he was just treading water on the front nine, and made the turn in 36 (1 over). But Stankey birdied the 10th hole (413 yards, par 4),  the 11th (185, par 3) and the long 12th (485, par 4) to establish a two-stroke lead. He bogeyed the the par-3 13th and led by one going into the 404-yard, par 4 15th, which both he and Zinser birdied.

Stankey locked up medalist honors with a birdie at the 18th (318, par 4), as he posted a back-nine 32 (minus 4). His valedictory 68 gave him a 54-hole total of 202 (minus 11).   

Zinser shot a 70 for a 204. Evan Brown of Loyola (Md.) also closed with a 70 and he ended up tied for third with Jake Mayer (Princeton) and Mitchell Cornell (Penn). They were all one stroke further behind at 205. 

While they were at it, Stankey and Zinser led Yale to the team championship. The Elis finished with an aggregate of 829. That was 14 better than the total posted by Penn. Temple took third place with an 847.
