Wersal's 74 Carries Springfield Girls into Lead at Class A Championship at Pebble Creek

  BECKER, Minn. – Spearheaded by senior Callie Wersal’s round of 2-over par 74 Tuesday, the Springfield girls jumped out to an eight-shot advantage over the defending champions from Fillmore Central to open the 2017 Minnesota State Girls High School Class A Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Club.

Wersal carded identical nines of 1-over par 37 to sit two shots clear of Legacy Christian Academy’s Sophie Gray to lead the individual competition after the first 18 holes of play.

The Tigers also got a big boost from Jena Roiger who carded an opening-round 84. Grace Miller and Allison Scheevel paced Fillmore Central, who cruised to a 32-shot victory in 2016, as both players carded rounds of 84 to finish the first round tied for ninth.

Minneota’s Heidi Guttormson fired a round of 78 Tuesday and will begin the final round tied for third with Park Christian sophomore Emily Doeden.

The 2017 Minnesota State Girls High School Class A Championship concludes Wednesday with final-round tee times beginning at noon at Pebble Creek Golf Club.
