How They're Doing: Minnesotans on Pro Tour Money Lists -- Oct. 28
October 28, 2024
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Benoit Beisser lost his margin for error when he bogeyed the 17th hole at Lone Tree Golf Club on Thursday. But he made up for it with a birdie at the 18th hole, which gave him one-sroke victory over Brett Swedberg in the ninth tournament of the Gateway Pro Tour's 2012 Arizona Series.
Swedberg, the former Minnesota state high school and State Open champion from Alexandria, started the day three strokes out of the lead. He shot 33 (3 under) on the front nine, but Beisser shot 32 and led by four at that point. Birdies by Swedberg at the 13th and 16th holes reduced the deficit to two, and Beisser's bogey at the 17th trimmed his advantage to a single stroke.
So it came down to the 572-yard, par-5 18th. Swedberg birdied it, which meant that Beisser, playing in the group right behind him, needed a birdie to win. He got it, and claimed the fifth Gateway title of his career.
Beisser ended up with a 67 Thursday. His 54-hole total was 196, 17 under par.
Swedberg closed with his second 65 in a row, which gave him an aggregate of 197.
Brad Hopfinger matched Beisser's 67 and finished third with a 199.
Beisser, a 30-year-old Arizona State alumnus, made a name for himself when he was part of the Big Break Mesquite series on the Golf Channel a few years ago. Nevertheless, he's made a lot of money on the Gateway circuit, more than $250,000 in the last four years.
His victory on Thursday was worth $12,500. As a result, he's now No. 1 on this year's money list, with $30,750 in nine events.
Swedberg, who has won on the Gateway, earned $6,600 for his runner-up finish. He's No. 17 on the money list with $10,182 in the seven tournaments that he's played.
