Olsgaard Rallies from 3 Down to Win Round of 32 Match at Pine to Palm

DETROIT LAKES --  Three of the top four seeds at the Pine to Palm on Thursday in the first round of match play. The only member of the group to survive was Nick Olsgaard, and things didn't look too promising for him on Friday.

Olsgaard, the No. 3 seed, was 3 down to Troy Klongerbo after 13 holes. But the former Moorhead High School star -- and soon-to-be-junior at the University of Arizona -- won the next four holes in a row and halved the 18th at Detroit Country Club to win the Round of 32 match 1 up.

They finished about 10 minutes before a thunderstorm hit the course. Because of the storm, not all of Friday's matches were completed, and among those that will have to be resumed Saturday morning is the one that will supply Olsgaard's next opponent, either Patrick Larkin of St. Cloud or Brad Andvik of Sartell.

In the first round of matches, defending champion Todd Hillier (the No. 1 seed) lost to Teddy Cox, medalist Erik Van Rooyen (No. 2) lost to Trevor Vandelac, and Beau Hanson (No. 4) lost to Mitch Buboltz. Of the three players who sprang those upsets, only Vandelac made it through the next round. He edged Taylor Cavanagh 1 up.

Thomas Welk took care of Cox, beating him 1 up. As for Buboltz, who lives in Detroit Lakes, a former DL High School golfer, Robert Wagner, who now lives in St. Louis Park, eliminated him 4&3.
